Railway inspires ’sound journey’

September 21, 2007

Tirwedd Soniarus - Abby SohnSt Catherine’s Church in Pontypridd will echo this weekend to sounds inspired by the town’s historic railway line to Barry.”Tirwedd Soniarus”, a sonic installation created by artist Abby Sohn, can be experienced at the church in Gelliwastad Road on Saturday, September 22.

The work is the result of Sohn’s research into the industrial remains of the disused railway line from Trehafod to Barry Pier.

“I located the stations and signal boxes along the route using historical railway atlases and Ordinance Survey maps. The musical composition includes samples from interviews, railway signal bells and bell ringing. Chords and melodic phrases were formulated by relating these locations to the notes of the eight bells of St Catherine’s Church,” said Sohn.

Anne Hayes, Digital Media Co-ordinator, Rhondda Cynon Taf Cultural Services, said: “People who come along to this unique event can enjoy a 20-minute musical composition, which locates and evokes the sounds, memories and atmosphere of the places on this lost journey.”

“Tirwedd Soniarus” is an artist-led initiative funded by an Arts Council of Wales Individual Project Grant and financial support from the Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cultural Services Digital Media Programme and the Arts and Town Centres’ Regeneration Programme.

In Pontypridd, this work is presented as part of the Arts and Town Centres’ Regeneration Programme.
