Assembly Minister develops trade links for Welsh Lamb with Dubai
March 5, 2008
Rural Affairs Minister Elin Jones returned last week from a short tour of the United Arab Emirates, during which she had positive discussions with the UAE Government about re-opening the export market for Welsh lamb.
A variety of Welsh companies have been exhibiting at the Gulfood Show in Dubai, which started on Sunday 24 February and ended on Wednesday 27 February. Gulfood has, during its 13 years in existence, become the showcase trade event for companies hoping to access the lucrative market of two billion consumers in the Middle East.
Supporting Welsh red meat, Hybu Cig Cymru was present in order to re-establish contact with customers following the ban on exports as a result of last year’s Foot and Mouth disease outbreak. Elin Jones met with His Excellency Dr Rashid Ahmed Bin Fahd, UAE Environment Minister [pictured], to press his government to re-open the market for Welsh lamb as soon as possible, now that the World Animal Health Organisation (OIE) had declared the UK animal disease free.
