Local Songwriters Wanted

October 1, 2007

Amy WadgeFancy yourself as the next KT Tunstall or James Taylor? If you are a singer/songwriter aged 16 and over and want to develop your skills, why not join a weekend Songwriting Masterclass at Dare Valley Country Park, Aberdare, on Saturday and Sunday October 13 and 14.

The masterclass will be led by Pontypridd-based singer/songwriter Amy Wadge from 9.30am-4.30pm each day. The weekend costs £75, which also includes a ticket to see Gretchen Peters at the Coliseum Theatre, Aberdare, on October 12 and Buddy Mondlock at the Park and Dare Theatre, Treorchy, on October 15.

Amy Wadge, who wrote her first song at the age of nine and landed her first record deal aged just 14, said: “I’m really looking forward to the workshop, which will be very informal. I’m trying to activate people to use the skills they’ve already got and give them guidance.

“Whatever instrument you play, bring it along. If people don’t have a guitar or sing and are just writers, come along - everybody’s welcome. It’s really nice to see new talent.”

Geoff Cripps, Artistic Director, Rhondda Cynon Taf Cultural Services, said: “Great songs provide the soundtrack to our lives, and the marriage of lyric and tune and good arrangements isn’t just down to good luck!

“We are delighted that budding tunesmiths in our area can enjoy this unique opportunity to develop their skills and abilities with Amy Wadge - one of the best singer-songwriters of her generation.”

The masterclass is one of this autumn’s Take pART events. Take pART is an exciting new initiative funded by the Arts Council of Wales and run by Rhondda Cynon Taf Cultural Services. Take pART offers a varied programme of participatory and educational activities for everyone living, studying, working in or visiting Rhondda Cynon Taf.

Linked between the three Cultural Services venues - the Park and Dare, the Coliseum Theatre and the Muni Arts Centre - together with the Arts Development Unit, community/arts organisations and visiting performing artists and arts companies, Take pART aims to increase participation in the arts and cultural life of the borough.

The first programme runs through to early December, with activities including introduction to film, circus skills, and urban arts workshops. For more information including dates and times of all Take pART workshops, please contact the Muni Arts Centre on 01443 485934.

Zoom - the young people’s film and media development programme, No Fit State Circus, and Elemental Force are among the professional companies and artists providing the Take pART programme.
