Plaid attacks Penderyn Post Office closure plans

November 23, 2007

Plans to close Penderyn Post Office have been criticised by Plaid AM Leanne Wood.

According to the plans, which are now in public consultation, five Cynon Valley post offices will be closed including one at Glancynon; Glyn Gwyn Street, Miskin; Gadlys Road, Aberdare; Penderyn Community Centre, Penderyn; and Merthyr Road, Llwydcoed.

Leanne Wood, who is a Plaid Assembly Member for South Wales Central, said:
“This is a shocking plan. Plaid will be vociferously opposing this savage post office closure programme by Labour in London. Our post offices have suffered a sustained attack by successive Tory and New Labour administrations. 3,500 Post Offices closed under the last Tory Government, and over 4,000 have closed under New Labour. The government’s announcement to slash the Post Office network by a fifth marks the latest stage of this onslaught. This is not what the public want.”

“The government funded the most recent closure programme to the tune of £500,000,000 - with the support of Labour MPs from Wales. This is just the latest in cuts to local services which the public and Plaid do not want to see.”

Morgan Lloyd, a Llwydcoed resident, added:
“I very much fear that the consultation exercise will be nothing but a sham and that these closures will go ahead regardless of the will of the people. Nevertheless, I urge local residents to make their view known to see if we can stop these cuts and retain our network of sub post offices.”

The consultation period ends on December 10.
